Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler. Historical information.

The  early  incarnation of  Hitlers  bodyguard was the  Stabswache ( staff Guard).  Used In  the beer halls of Munich to protect  the fuhrer. Sepp Dietrich assumed command in  Berlin on 17 March 1933. This unit replaced the regular army guards at the Reich Chancellery. Many of  the original   members  went on to become  distinguished commanders  in the  Waffen  SS , many to win  the highest  award  the Knights Cross,

Later more units  were formed  and  the  group evolved into the SS-Sonderkommando Berlin still under Dietrich’s command. Most of the training staff came from the ranks of the army.  During  this  time the  majority of there their duties involved providing outer security for Hitler at his residences, public appearances and guard duty at the Reich Chancellery.

The  true incarnation the  SS Leibstandarte  was in November 1933, on the 10th anniversary of the Beer Hall Putsch.  At  memorial  rally  the SS- Sonderkommando  swore personal allegiance to Hitler. At the conclusion of  the  rally the unit received the new title, “Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler” (LAH). The term Leibstandarte does not  have an  exact  translation  but an  approximate term  would be Lifeguards.

The  Schutzstaffel (SS)

The  Schutzstaffel (SS) were the  elite guard  of  the Third  Reich. Formed in 1925 as  a small  bodyguard to protect  Hitler.  It  remained  in this  capacity until Heinrich Himmler  took  charge in 1929. So under his jurisdiction  it  grew  to an enormous organisation. Also It became  very powerful. Its co-opted  national police forces, Security, intelligence and business. Eventually  the SS developed is  own branch  of  the Wehrmacht, the  Waffen SS (armed  SS).  From the beginning members  were chosen for  their physical and mental  ability and also there  character. Entry  was  from  21  years  of  age  followed by 18 months probationary period.  The  SS eventually   reflected  Himmlers  esoteric interests  and encompassed  quasi religious  ceremonies  and beliefs.  From 1945  it  was  classed  as a criminal organisation.
